Understanding Annuities

A financial instrument built to outlast you.

An annuity is a contract between you and an insurance company. You contribute funds, either as a lump sum or over time, and in return, the insurance company guarantees to grow that money and pay it back to you as a reliable income stream, either immediately or at a future date you choose.

Unlike a savings account that can be depleted, or a market investment that can lose value, an annuity is structured to provide income you cannot outlive. The insurance company assumes the risk. You receive the certainty.

Annuities are not one-size-fits-all instruments. They come in several forms, each designed for a different financial goal, timeline, and starting point. Goshen Financial works with multiple top-rated carriers to match the right structure to your actual situation.

01

You fund the annuity

Either with a lump sum (single premium) or with regular contributions over time ($100/month or more). The money grows inside the contract, tax-deferred.

02

Your money grows, protected

Depending on the annuity type, growth is either guaranteed (fixed) or linked to a market index with a floor that prevents losses (indexed).

03

Income begins when you choose

You decide when to begin receiving payments, at retirement, at a specific age, or a milestone of your choosing. Payments can be structured for a set period or for the rest of your life.

04

Your beneficiaries are protected

Remaining account value passes to named beneficiaries, outside of probate, directly and efficiently.

Types of Annuities

Three structures. One goal, financial security.

Goshen Financial offers any combination of the following annuity types, matched to your specific timeline, income goals, and risk tolerance.

Fixed Annuity

Provides a guaranteed interest rate on your contributions for a defined period. Fully predictable growth, no market exposure, no surprises. Includes Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuities (MYGAs), currently paying competitive fixed rates, often higher than traditional CDs or savings accounts.

Guaranteed growth

Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA)

Growth linked to a market index with a 0% floor that prevents losses in down years. You participate in market gains up to a cap. Principal is protected while growth potential exceeds traditional fixed rates.

Growth + protection

Deferred Income Annuity

You contribute now and begin receiving guaranteed income at a future date of your choosing. The longer the deferral period, the greater the income benefit. Particularly powerful when started early.

Retirement Accounts

Four accounts. One tax decision that shapes your retirement.

How you save for retirement matters as much as how much. Each account below treats your taxes differently, here is what sets them apart.

Traditional IRA

  • Contributions may be tax-deductible today, lowering your taxable income now
  • Withdrawals in retirement are taxed as ordinary income
  • Required withdrawals begin at a set age
Save on taxes now

Roth IRA

  • Funded with after-tax dollars, so there is no deduction going in
  • Growth and qualified withdrawals are 100% tax-free
  • No required withdrawals during your lifetime
Tax-free income later

SEP IRA

  • Built for self-employed individuals and business owners
  • Contribution limit works differently — as a percentage of income, allowing a significantly larger portion of your income than a Traditional or Roth IRA
  • Contributions may be tax-deductible, lowering your taxable income today
For the self-employed

SIMPLE IRA

  • Built for small business owners who want to offer a retirement plan with less cost and paperwork than a 401(k)
  • The employer is required to contribute, either matching what employees set aside or contributing a set amount for every eligible employee
  • Contributions lower taxable income today, both for the business and for you personally if you participate, and grow your retirement savings
For small business owners

The Traditional and Roth IRA share the same annual contribution amount, with an extra catch-up amount once you turn 50. The SEP IRA limit works differently — it is based on a percentage of your income, not a flat dollar amount. Your broker will confirm current limits and any income-based phase-outs with you before you fund anything.

Have a retirement account from a previous employer? It doesn't have to sit there, out of your hands, exposed to market loss. Depending on where it goes, it can keep growing tax-deferred or convert to tax-free income, let's find out which move fits your situation.

For income above Roth IRA limits, indexed universal life insurance offers a similar tax-free income strategy with no income cap. See how it fits →

Common Questions

Retirement questions, answered plainly.

These are the questions we hear most often.

In a fixed annuity or fixed indexed annuity, no. Your principal is contractually protected. In a fixed indexed annuity, the floor is 0%, meaning in a year when the market falls, your balance holds rather than declining. Goshen Financial does not offer variable annuities, which do carry market risk. Every product we present is structured so that clients never lose their principal.
